Now that Oregon Football has officially parted ways with Head Coach Mark Helfrich the rumor mill is running at full steam.

Names of potential replacements are flying left and right, up and down, forwards and backwards. Seemingly every name, whether logical or not, has been thrown out there as a potential candidate.

One of the more illogical names to be tossed around is that of Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly. While a certain subset of Oregon fans are clamoring for the return of a certain Coach Kelly, it ain’t the one named Brain.

The rumor apparently started with a screen grab showing flight information for a private jet going from South Bend (where Notre Dame is) to Eugene (where…)

And while the Brian Kelly to Eugene talk seems to be almost all smoke and no fire we thought, because you never know what can happen (not many expected Brady Hoke to be named Defensive Coordinator) that we would take a look at 5 things Oregon Football fans need to know about Brian Kelly –

  • He has a 59-31 record at Notre Dame, including a 12-1 2012 season that saw the Fighting Irish’s one loss come in the National Championship game to Alabama.
  • Much like another coach that reached the Title game in the past 4 years 2016 was a season to forget as Kelly’s squad finished the year 4-8 (hey, just like the Ducks)
  • Brian Kelly has anger problems. Like many middle aged men who can’t handle adversity, Kelly has a habit of angrily lashing out and those around him. It is not uncommon to see Kelly berate his players on the sideline or in one instance get physical with an assistant coach.
  • Speaking of that 2012 run to the title game, oh yeah, it doesn’t count anymore. Notre Dame was forced to vacate it’s 2012 and 2013 seasons do to rampant academic cheating by the players. Not sure that one will fit the “Men of Oregon” ethos.
  • Brian Kelly has twice been named coach of the year, in 2012 and in 2009, when as head coach of Cincinnati he went 12-0. No word yet on whether or not he will have to vacate that season as well. Just kidding. Sort of.
  • Kelly is an Offensive Minded Coach which means if he lands at Oregon, the philosophy will have to be ‘tweaked’ rather than completely overhauled. If it’s true, it makes sense.

What do you think Duck fans? Would Brian Kelly be a good candidate to replace Mark Helfrich?
