Mario Cristobal is one of the best recruiters in college football and that was never more evident than this past offseason when he sewed up the No. 6 recruiting class in the country for 2021.

The head coach is now looking to load up in the 2022 recruiting class as the roster is taking shape and it looks like it could legitimately be a national title contender.

The Ducks have one of the most talented rosters, on paper, in school history — yes, that includes the Chip Kelly era. Oregon is fielding about a dozen of its top recruits ever in 2021 and that should lead to another Pac-12 North title and conference championship appearance.

But recruiting for 2022 can’t be overlooked just because this team has the potential to be so good and Cristobal knows that. That’s why he’s recruited so hard nationally.

That includes the Midwest where he just made the cut for one of the nation’s top defensive tackle prospects in the 2022 class, Alex VanSumeren.

It’s not a surprise to see the Ducks in on one of the top prospects from the Midwest because they have a national brand that not many others in the Pac-12 possess.

Kids from the Midwest grew up knowing the Ducks as title contenders and that continues today.

Where Oregon football might stand with VanSumeren

VanSumeren was committed to Michigan not long ago and after his brother transferred from the program, he reopened his recruitment.

Right now, Michigan State might be the favorite for the Michigan-native as his brother transferred to the Spartans. The thought process right now is that the two may want to play for the same program, but Alex is also very high on Clemson.

The Ducks may be on the outside looking in here, but there’s plenty of time left in his recruitment as he still has to take visits before making that decision. A visit to Eugene could change a lot here.

VanSumeren is ranked the No. 193 overall prospect and 16th-best defensive tackle in the 2022 recruiting class, per the 247Sports composite.
