5-star Oregon commit visiting Michigan this weekend is not good for Dan Lanning

The Oregon football team is spending this weekend on the road as the Ducks travel to Stillwater to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Given that the team won’t be spending the weekend in Autzen Stadium it should be a quiet weekend for the program on the recruiting front after a busy weekend to start the season hosting some of the Nation’s top playmakers. 

While Oregon won’t be hosting any recruits this weekend, it’s always interesting to see where some of the Ducks’ commits and recruiting targets will be visiting. On Friday Night, the Ducks received some concerning news with the plans of one of their 5-star commits.

Oregon commit Dakota Guerrant plans last minute trip to Michigan

This weekend, Oregon Ducks commit Dakota Guerrant will be visiting Michigan for their matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners. The visit to Ann Arbor was reported for the first time on Friday Night.

While Dakota Guerrant is committed to the Ducks, any time that a player who’s announced their commitment visits elsewhere it sets off red flags. Guerrant spent last weekend in Autzen Stadium with his teammate Deandre Bidden, but both will now visit Michigan.

Dakota Guerrant committed to the Ducks this Summer live on The Pat McAfee Show, but in-state Michigan was a finalist for the Harper Woods native. According to the Rivals Industry Recruiting Rankings, Dakota Guerrant ranks as the top recruit in the Ducks class as the 21st ranked player in the Country, the 5th ranked wide receiver in the class, and the top ranked player out of Michigan.

The verdict around Dakota Guerrant and Michigan has been that he and his family needed to see what the Wolverines' offense looks like before evaluating the program. Kyle Whittingham better hope that Guerrant sees a better product than the one the Wolverines put on the field last weekend when Michigan needed an added second to beat Western Michigan.

The timing of the visit to Michigan may be perfect for Oregon if Dakota Guerrant is still considering flipping to the in-state team. Kyle Whittingham is already talking about potentially benching Bryce Underwood one game into the season, and the offense may be a mess going up against an elite Oklahoma defense.

When Dakota Guerrant committed to the Ducks it seemed like the Michigan talks may die down as he called Oregon a dream school.

"This was always my dream school growing up. Then they started recruiting, it felt like family from the start. I just kept building things with them, and how they're producing, things like that, I've kind of seen myself there from the start."

If Oregon were to lose Dakota Guerrant, the Ducks still have solid receiving talent in this class, but the staff would also likely have to look to pull off a flip of their own. Oregon also holds a commitment from elite athlete Xavier Sabb, who ranks as a top 40 player in the country, as well as underrated in-state recruit Malachi Garlington.

In recruiting, nothing is finished until a player officially signs, and even then chaos can ensue like Oregon has seen with Dallas Wilson and Bryson Beaver. Flip talks likely won't die down until National Signing Day, meaning that this could be a stressful fall if Guerrant continues visiting the in-state Big Ten rival.
