Dana Altman adds 6-11 forward from the portal

Penn State big man Miles Goodman committed to the Ducks on Friday, a 6-11 forward who will be the tallest player on the team unless Nate Bittle comes back.

Goodman played sparingly for the Nittany Lions, appearing in just 13 games, 5.9 minutes a game and 1.2 points an appearance.

His mop-up stints were unimpressive. The long-armed frontcourt prospect with the wide, wide wingspan shot 12.5 percent from the free throw line but 58 percent from the floor, pulling down just over a rebound a game. A shoulder injury limited his progress.

He started his basketball journey at Bishop O'Dea High School in Seattle, then transferred to Southern California Academy, blossoming into a Top 100 recruit.

In his first three years of prep basketball he racked up 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals per game.

Dana Altman's made a career out of taking raw talent and molding it into an effective team that peaks in March. It'd be foolish to doubt his scouting prowess after 780 wins, though Oregon's portal moves so far have been of the developmental variety.

They haven't added a big-splash player from the portal, unless fans count retaining Jackson Shelstad and Kwame Evans in that category.

On Wednesday, Altman and the Ducks added Elon guard TK Simpkins, a 16.4 points per game scorer at Elon University in the CAA, a 6-4 shooter from Brooklyn, New York.

Asked about Goodman in December, Penn State head coach Mike Rhoades said.:

"He’s a versatile big guy … He can move well, so he could do different things … All I want him to do is get his feet wet and just fly around and throw his body around and play with great activity."

His feet were once wet, but now they are webbed.
