Former Dan Lanning assistant stands between Oregon and potential 5-star QB

After a thrilling start to the Summer on the recruiting trail the attention for the Oregon Ducks is starting to shift. The Ducks reeled in commitment after commitment in the 2027 recruiting class, and with the group mostly in place the coaching staff can start to look forward. At this point in the offseason, the Ducks haven’t landed a commitment in the 2028 recruiting class, but as the group moves into focus that should change.

Typically, the first dominos to fall in any recruiting cycle are the quarterbacks as they most often commit first allowing the coaching staff to start building a class around them. Oregon has been on a tear recruiting quarterbacks in recent years, and while the Ducks have a 5-star on board in Will Mencl, the staff is already eyeing QBs in the 2028 class.

Oregon battling former OC Will Stein for highly coveted QB

As the 2028 recruiting board starts to take shape, it’s starting to look like the top quarterback on the board for the Ducks is elite recruit Josiah Boyd. Several recruiting insiders have already predicted that the Ducks will win out for Boyd, but there will certainly be other programs that push Oregon in this recruitment.

The main opposition for the Oregon Ducks appears to be a familiar face as Kentucky and former Oregon OC Will Stein as the Wildcats are the other program building momentum with Boyd. It’s easy to see why Josiah Boyd would be considering Kentucky if he likes Oregon given the fact that he’s likely watched a ton of Stein’s offense studying the Ducks.

Playing in the Ducks favor is the fact that Josiah Boyd’s already talked about Oregon being a dream school when he was growing up. While other factors can come into play, just like when wide receiver Dakota Guerrant picked the Ducks, being a recruits favorite team can go a long way.

According to Rivals' 2028 recruiting rankings, Josiah Boyd is the 29th ranked player in the class, the 2nd ranked quarterback in the class, and the 3rd ranked player out of California. The Ducks are already targeting a ton of talent out of the state of California, and landing Josiah Boyd to help with recruiting them would only help the Ducks chances.

This Fall will be incredibly important for the Ducks as the staff will look to get Boyd on campus for a game. The Ducks going on another deep College Football Playoff run while Dante Moore continuing to showcase Oregon’s ability to develop QBs will only bolster the chances that Boyd ends up playing college football in Eugene.
