Key Oregon basketball player will miss start of 2024-25 season
With the football team jumping to No. 1 in the AP Top 25, it's easy to forget that there are other sports in Eugene worth keeping an eye on right now.
One of those is Oregon basketball.
Dana Altman and the Ducks have been on the cusp of being really good for a few years now but there always seems to be that one missing piece. Fortunately, Altman hit the transfer portal hard this offseason (again) and landed some key contributors.
Unfortunately, one of these newcomers will miss some time at the beginning of the season.
According to Jon Rothstein, Oregon will be without Georgetown transfer Supreme Cook to begin the 2024-25 season and the Ducks are expecting to get him back by mid-November.
If you're doing the math, that means that Cook will likely miss 3-4 games as the Ducks open the season on Nov. 4 against UC Riverside and then play Montana on Nov. 8 and Portland on Nov. 12. This sounds like he'd be back around Nov. 17 for the Troy game but hopefully he's a full-go by Nov. 21 when Oregon travels to Corvallis for a non-conference showdown with Oregon State (still weird to say).
Cook was one of the key players for Georgetown last season before hitting the transfer portal and coming to Eugene. He averaged 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in 2023-24 but his career year was the season before in which he averaged 13.1 points and 8.5 boards.
Hopefully the Ducks can get him back by the Oregon State game because Cook is going to be a key figure on this year's team and they can't be losing to the Beavers.
