Throughout the start of the 2024-25 season, the Oregon men's basketball team hasn't just been winning on the court, but the Ducks have also been winning when it comes to recruiting – both high school prospects and from the transfer portal.
However, on Thursday, Jan. 16, a four-star center announced his commitment and despite Oregon being in his final three schools, he chose someone other than Dana Altman and the Ducks.
Mouhamed Sylla, the No. 1 center in the class of 2025, committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets over the Oregon Ducks and the Arkansas Razorbacks, who were the other schools within his final group of programs under consideration.
On Tuesday, just two days before his commitment, Sylla shared his final three schools after previously narrowing his search down to five programs – which included Washington in Kansas in addition to his final three.
After his commitment to the Yellow Jackets, Sylla spoke with On3 about why he chose Georgia Tech over the SEC or Big Ten programs.
“I chose Georgia Tech because on my visit there I felt like I’m at home and also I knew they could help me to make it to the league," Sylla said. "[The staff members] have been here from the beginning and they never gave up on me and I believe in them.”
Sylla spoke highly of Georgia Tech's head coach Damon Stoudamire as well as the rest of the Yellow Jackets men's basketball recruiting and coaching staff. Currently, Georgia Tech holds the same overall record as Oregon at 15-2 overall.
Oregon's head coach Altman always manages to align Rubik's Cubes but Sylla was a recruit that would have been an incredible addition to the Ducks' future roster.
