The Oregon Basketball season got off to a thrilling start on Monday Night with the Ducks picking up a season opening win over Montana. While Montana is far from the toughest opponent, it was great to see the new look Oregon squad in action after an off-season filled with turnover. Given the fact that the Ducks bring in more transfers than any other program in the Big Ten, and how recently, Dana Altman retired, this opening stretch was going to be important for the team to find their footing.
As the Ducks look to build on the momentum built in the season opener it appears that Tony Stubblefield’s team suffered a massive setback that could shape the non-conference slate, and the start of Big Ten play for a program with a lot to prove coming off the worst season of Dana Altman's Oregon tenure.
Oregon star Tyrone Riley IV suffered hand injury in season opener

Scored 17 in the opener against Montana.
The news is devastating for the Oregon Basketball team given how exciting Riley was in the season opener. The San Francisco transfer led the team with 17 points while adding 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 4 steals. Riley looked like the clear alpha for the Ducks, and an impact playmaker on both ends of the court, making it a significant blow to the team.
The task for interim head coach Tony Stubblefield becomes much harder now with Riley out of the picture. The timeline for re-evaluation lands in the early part of December, meaning Riley will miss the tougher stretch of non-conference games, and potentially the first few games of Big Ten play.
The lone bright side for the Ducks is that this roster has a ton of talent at the guard position, and it could force others on the team to step up. Fred Payne and Wei Lin each scored 10+ points in the season opener as potential scoring sources for the Ducks. Kentucky transfer Jasper Johnson had some turnover issues and scored just 1 point, but has shown he has the talent to score in bunches to drive an offense.
The next four games without Riley are going to be important for the Ducks as the end of the month into December presents a tough stretch that could make or break an NCAA Tournament resumé. Oregon faces four straight Non-Power 4 opponents before Top 25 tests against No. 13 St. John’s, No. 22 UCLA, and No. 21 USC which are big opportunities for this group.
The task of replacing Tyrone Riley IV starts on Friday at 3:00 PM PT as the Ducks host Eastern Washington. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten+.
