Saturday kicks off the college football season for the Oregon Ducks, but it also resumes recruiting season for the Ducks. This Summer was incredibly busy for the coaching staff as the Ducks put all the pieces in place for what ranks as the Nation's 4th ranked class in the 2027 recruiting cycle. After a hectic recruiting stretch for the Ducks, Oregon gets to reset and focus on building a 2028 recruiting class.
This weekend truly kicks off the 2028 cycle for the Ducks as some of the top recruits, regardless of class, will be in Eugene. The first position of priority in every class is quarterback, as they become the biggest asset for the coaching staff when it comes to recruiting other players. This weekend the Ducks will have several quarterback in town, and one may be working his way up the board as the top target in the cycle.
Oregon jumps to the lead for 4-star QB Tristin Gaines
The biggest focus at the quarterback position in the 2028 recruiting cycle for the Ducks has been the nation's 2nd-ranked quarterback and the 31st-ranked player in the country Josiah Boyd. While Josiah Boyd is still predicted to land with the Ducks, it looks like Oregon has several options they could push for a commitment from.
On Tuesday, Rivals moved Oregon ahead of Texas Tech, making the Ducks the favorite to land the 4-star recruit with a 35.8% chance to land the commitment. The coaching staff offered Tristin Gaines a scholarship in June, and the Ducks have quickly started to gain traction with the Texas native. The good news for the Ducks is that Tristin Gaines will be on campus this weekend for the Boise State game.

According to Rivals' Recruiting Rankings, Tristin Gaines is the 86th ranked player in the country, the 8th ranked quarterback in the class, and the 10th ranked player out of Texas. Gaines is a highly accurate quarterback with a great ability to extend plays with his legs, rather than taking off as a dual threat rusher.

This weekend should tell Oregon where they stand in this recruitment, and where the quarterback position stands as a whole for the Ducks in this cycle. Josiah Boyd and Tristin Gaines both have visits planned to Eugene this season, and the buzz coming out of the weekend could end up determining who's the first commit for the Ducks in the 2028 cycle.
