Oregon football has essentially locked up CFP berth with another No. 1 ranking
In case you forgot after celebrating that huge hoops win over Texas A&M earlier on Tuesday, Oregon football was awaiting the latest College Football Playoff projections and the Ducks were not let down.
Once again, and despite having a bye week following a tight win over Wisconsin two weeks ago, Oregon is ranked No. 1 in the projected College Football Playoff with one regular-season game remaining against rival Washington at home.
What this No. 1 overall ranking tells me is that Oregon has locked up a playoff spot no matter what happens in the final two games of the year.
Sure, a win over Washington would likely punch that ticket officially, but even in the case of a loss to the Huskies and a loss in the Big Ten title game, it would take a shocking drop down the rankings to ensure the Ducks don't make it to the playoff. And I just don't see that happening.
Here's the projected field, released by the committee on Tuesday:
Indiana had a rather large drop after losing to Ohio State this past weekend but the Hoosiers still remain in the field at 10-1 and would face fellow 10-1 Big Ten team Penn State in round one. Oregon would get the winner of Tennessee and Georgia in this scenario while potentially setting up a rematch with either Boise State or Ohio State in the semifinals.
As long as Oregon doesn't get run off the field by Washington this weekend and either wins or keeps the Big Ten title game close, I don't see a scenario in which the Ducks don't make the playoff.
Dan Lanning's team may have already punched its ticket.
