Oregon remains perfect after first Big Ten game of the season against a familiar foe
By Sam Fariss
The Oregon Ducks stormed into Los Angeles, after capturing the Players Era Festival title, to face a familiar opponent; the USC Trojans. For the first time in either team's history, the two programs would meet as Big Ten opponents instead of as members of the Pac-12 (or 10, or 8).
Heading into the conference game, the Ducks held a flawless 8-0 record to their name, after upsetting the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies and the No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide in the holiday tournament. Not to mention, Oregon had finally earned a place in the Top 25, finding itself as the No. 12 team in the country after the impressive start to its season.
The Ducks got off to a slow start against the Trojans and put a minimal 23 points on the board when the two teams headed to their locker rooms at halftime.
However, led by a 24-point game by sophomore guard Jackson Shelstad, the Ducks stormed into the second half and nearly tripled their total score. At the end of regulation, Oregon had come back from a 23-30 halftime deficit to fly home with a 68-60 victory over USC.
Alongside Shelstad's 24 points, senior guard Keeshawn Barthelemy scored an impressive 18 points off the bench. The two guards combined for nearly 62 percent of Oregon's total points. The other nine players who saw the court only combined for 26 total points.
Transfer forward Brandon Angel scored 8 points for the Ducks and contributed 7 rebounds to Oregon's comeback win over the Trojans.
Oregon will be back in action on Dec. 8 when the Ducks host the UCLA Bruins at Matthew Knight Arena. The game is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. PT on the Big Ten Network.
