Heading into the 2026 college football season, the expectations for the Oregon Ducks are simply National Championship or bust. The Dan Lanning era has been incredibly fun with the Bo Nix years along with the past two seasons making the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons while winning the Big Ten in 2025.

The moment that Dante Moore announced his decision to return to Oregon for one more season
rather than being a 1st round pick it elevated the expectations. Adding in the decisions to return by A'Mauri Washington and Matayo Uiagalelei, the Ducks may have the most talented group in program history.

On3's unit rankings only add to the pressure to deliver in 2026

As the season rapidly approaches, the focus in the media is quickly shifting from recruiting to the upcoming season. On3's JD PicKell revealed his rankings for the best defenses in the Country on Thursday, and the Oregon Ducks sat alone at the top of the list.

It's very easy to see why Oregon earned the top ranking on the list given the talent at each level of this defense. The defensive line is easily the Nation's best with the returning duo of Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei off the edge along with Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington at defensive tackle. The defensive backfield features the stellar duo of Brandon Finney Jr and Koi Perich which is arguably the best CB-S tandem in the Country.

The lone concern on defense may be the fact that the linebacker pairing isn't at that elite level. Returning Starter Jerry Mixon will be back in his role, and likely joined by veteran Devon Jackson, but the duo will need to prove they aren't a weakness in an otherwise loaded defense.

The reason that ranking the Ducks the Nation's best defense is the fact that the same rankings view Oregon's offense as the second best in the country behind Miami.

Coming into the season, Oregon feels most similar to the Ohio State team we saw two seasons ago. That Buckeyes team came into the year with a "Last Dance" mentality returning a ton of veterans, and while they suffered some losses in the regular season, in the College Football Playoff they proved they were the most talented team in the country.

No one will be asking Dan Lanning to lead the Ducks to an undefeated season and a National Championship like Indiana did this past season. It's terribly hard for any team to win it all, and Oregon knows this all too well, but this is hands down the most talented group in a long time, and failing to deliver would feel like a major disappointment.
