Oregon versus Purdue: A history of one of the new Big Ten matchups
By Sam Fariss
Believe it or not, the last time that the Oregon Ducks and the Purdue Boilermakers shared a field, UO had a quarterback (Jeremiah Masoli) wearing the No. 8 on his jersey and the Ducks walked away with a 38-36 victory over the Boilermakers.
This time around, the jersey No. 8 has a little bit more meaning for Oregon since the program's only Heisman winner, Marcus Mariota, wore it a decade ago. Now, quarterback Dillon Gabriel is repping the No. 8 for the Ducks as he and his team head to Purdue for another Big Ten matchup.
Oregon versus Purdue history
- Overall record: Oregon leads 2-1
- First matchup: Sept. 29, 1979 – Purdue, 13-7
- Most recent matchup: Sept. 12, 2009 – Oregon, 38-36
- Largest margin of victory: 6 points – Sept. 29, 1979 & Sept. 13, 2008
- Smallest margin of victory: 2 points – Sept. 12, 2009
The Ducks hold a one-game advantage over the Boilermakers in the two teams' brief history. However, Purdue lays claim to the first game between the two programs.
The largest margin of victory between the two rests at 6 points. In the first-ever matchup, the Boilermakers beat the Ducks 13-7 and in 2008, Oregon walked away victorious with a 32-26 win.
Oregon has started this season flawlessly, taking down the then-No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes and going 6-0 so far. As the Ducks head to West Lafayette to take on the Boilermakers, they are looking to improve to 7-0 on the year and knock Purdue down to 1-6 overall.
Currently, Oregon is the No. 1 team in the conference, and the newest No. 2 in the nation, while Purdue rests at No. 17 in the Big Ten standings. The two are scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 18.
