Arch Manning and Cade Klubnik plummeted, Ty Simpson disappeared and Jeremiah Smith slumped. It's early in the Heisman race, but disappointing open-game performances and low-scoring defensive battles shifted the odds in the Heisman race after Week One..

Jeremiyah Love and Carson Beck have a wide-open shot at a national audience tonight in a Sunday prime time game on Labor Day Weekend, Notre Dame at Miami on ABC.

Preseason favorite and Paul Finebaum-anointed Arch Manning tumbled badly after his 17-30, 170-yard, one touchdown, one interception performance against a stifling Ohio State defense. Jeremiah Smith's bid to become the first pure wide receiver to win since Devonta Smith in 2021 took a hit as Texas was allowed to play some ridiculously physical pass defense.

Despite being the best player in college football Smith may not win the Heisman, but Texas DB Malik Muhammad deserves an Oscar for celebrating after this play, a moment of pure cornerback audacity.

Oregon's Dante Moore jumped to a tie for fourth in the overall odds after a solid debut in the Ducks 59-13 win over Montana State, 18-23 passing for 213 yards and three touchdowns.

His big chance to become the third straight UO quarterback to make it to New York comes on September 27 in a road game against Drew Allar and Penn State.

Moore distributed the ball beautifully in Oregon's opening win, following the game plan with good decision-making and accuracy, a 78 percent completion rate.

It helps him to have such a talented cast of playmakers, and the defense and the offensive line look solid. All in all, a great recipe for staying in the Heisman race.

Ten different receivers caught passes, and Moore did a good job of staying within the offense and taking what the defense gave him, precisely what Will Stein and Dan Lanning expected from him as the starter. He never once put the ball in jeopardy.

The preseason knocks on Moore about being immobile or erratic with the football proved to be not very accurate. He looked like a much more polished quarterback in his first start at Oregon, even potentially better than Gabriel or Nix. Of course, sterner tests await, including some high-pressure road games.
