In a few months when we look back at the story lines that shaped 2016, the story of Devon Allen will likely be the top story of the year. The dual sport athlete in Football and Track and Field ended his football season in 2014 with a knee injury and has come back to take a National Championship in the 110 Meter Hurdles, as well as winning at the Olympic Trials send him to Rio De Janeiro to compete for Gold.
His football family was with him all the way. There is no stage bigger in Sport than the Olympics. The World is Watching and Allen breezed through his qualifier finishing second in his heat. In the Semi-Final he stumbled a bit, but did enough to make it through to the 110 Meter final on time. In the final Allen did not Medal but Omar McCleod of Jamaica took the gold in 13.05 seconds.
Allen did run a 13.03 in his winning run in Eugene, but it was not to be on Tuesday night. .04 separated first place from last place in a very talented 110 Meter Final. The accomplishment to even get to Rio is huge for the Oregon Ducks Wide Receiver and finish 5th best in the World. He returns to Eugene as an Olympian and 2020 cannot get here fast enough.
Devon Allen will have a decision to make concerning his future. He does have the option of going Professional in Track and Field and retaining his College Football eligibility if he chooses to do so. Right now, everyone in Eugene pulling for Allen in the Olympics will shift the momentum to Oregon Football. He will look to get in ten practices with the Ducks before he takes the field at Autzen Stadium.
