The Oregon Ducks may have three losses on the season and are out of the National Championship, but Quarterback Vernon Adams is beginning to live up to the hype that brought him to Eugene. His talent, when healthy can be defined with one word. Clutch. In his last two games against Washington and Arizona State he has found a way to extend plays, and pull of passes to Wide Receivers and Running Backs that others would attempt, but would likely fall incomplete. What is even more impressive is that Vernon Adams has used multiple players to complete the feat.
With drives on the line, with the game on the line he has made completions that have fans cheering and opposing Defensive Coordinators having meltdowns on the sideline. Against Washington the Oregon Ducks were 9 for 18 on third down and 1 for 1 on fourth down. The majority of that fifty percent on third down was all on the legs and decision making of the Oregon Transfer Quarterback. On Thursday night against Arizona State, the statistics were different, but the outcome was similar.
Again, time after time Adams evaded tacklers and blitzes from the Sun Devils Defense to complete passes down field. He threw passes down the middle that were complete. He threw passes across his body going in the opposite direction that were complete. One on third down, for a touchdown that kept Oregon in the game to get it to Overtime where they eventually won it. He is a play extender as well as a play maker. In making the comparison to Marcus Mariota, Adams has been bigger in clutch positions this season. There is a reason for this.
Mariota had better protection, and while third and fourth down did make appearances with the now Tennessee Titans Quarterback when he was at Oregon, the team rarely had a punt. The team was different, the scoring threats nine times out of ten were a reality on every series. This team has three losses, but one man has shown he has grit, guts and can make plays with his feet and his arm. There will always be comparisons to the best QB to play the position for Oregon, but Adams is starting to cast his own shadow on the program and that is a good thing.

The challenge now is to win games and to try to win out, but it won’t be easy. The home stretch is challenging with Cal, Stanford, USC and Oregon State in the next month. We know we will see highlights over the next month that will make us cheer and smile and we know that Oregon will get to a bowl game, just not the one we all thought at the beginning of the season. The fun for Adams is in the home stretch as he has just one year in Eugene. We should all embrace the experience and enjoy the ride he is going to lead us on for the next month.
