The National Football League offices announced on Wednesday morning that Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. The award comes 3 days after the Titans’ 34-28 overtime victory on the road against the New Orleans Saints. Mariota is only the second rookie quarterback in NFL history to win the award twice in a season. He previously won the award after completing 87 percent of his passes and throwing 2 touchdowns week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Marcus Mariota’s stat line against New Orleans was impressive, and he became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to have two games with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions (Week 1 vs Tampa Bay). He threw for 371 yards against the Saints, and also completed the game winning score in overtime. Among his other records set in the game, he broke the franchise record for passing yards in a game by a rookie, a record that he had already broken earlier in the season.
After missing the previous 2 games with a knee injury, Mariota’s return re-sparked the Titans offense, and has given his team an opportunity to compete for divisional title.
At 2-6, the Titans will host the undefeated Carolina Panthers this Sunday, before a favorable 4 game stretch which features 2 games against Jacksonville, Oakland in Nashville, and the Jets on the road.
The Titans play Carolina on Sunday at 1 PM EST (10 AM PT) on FOX.
