The Oregon Ducks had a very workman-like first half leading by as many as 10, but would see the lead cut to 5 points by the St. Joseph’s Hawks leading into halftime. The second half was a different story for Oregon compared to the blowout against Holy Cross on Thursday night. For the game, the Ducks had more turnovers, missed 18 3-point shots and were out rebounded by the Hawks. St. Joseph’s showed fight and tied the game at 45. In the end it was the Oregon that was able to escape with free throws to set a date with Duke in the Sweet 16.
Tyler Dorsey had big shots all night, the biggest being the final two of the night to put the Oregon Ducks up five points with under 10 seconds to go. The Ducks would have their best season in 77 years hitting the 30 win mark and moving onto the Sweet 16. Dorsey had 14 points and 7 rebounds but the most important points of the night. Dillon Brooks had 25 points, Elgin Cook finished with 18 for Dana Altman and the Ducks.
The Oregon Ducks did a good job of guarding DeAndre’ Bembry on the night, limiting his points for the majority of the game. He had just two points over a 20 minute span of playing time between the first and second half, but finished the game with a double double with 16 points and 12 rebounds keeping St Joe’s in the game for the better part of the second half.
Overall, it was not a good opening weekend for the Pac-12 Conference and the Pac-12 Champions are the only remaining Pac-12 team in the NCAA Tournament moving to the Sweet 16.
