It was not pitching so much that did the Oregon Ducks in this weekend against the Utah Utes, but a serious lack of being able to hit the ball. Every baseball team goes through a period of adversity, and for Oregon it has been the last two weeks. Coming off being swept out of SEC Country, one would think a return to home and PK Park would be a confidence builder. On Friday and Sunday it was not the case.
George Horton watched his team get just six hits in two of the three games against Utah. The Ducks did have a big game on Saturday with team high 14 hits in their lone won over the Utah Utes in the series. Pitching over the weekend with Cole Irvin, Matt Krook, and David Peterson was solid.
Irvin threw into the seventh inning giving up just two runs and struck out six. Matt Krook’s struggle continued as he gave up 5 runs through four innings on Saturday, but the Oregon Offense bailed him out to a no decision. The finale saw David Peterson with some early mistakes in the first inning, but shutout the Utes in his final five innings. The Oregon Offense could not solve Utah Starter Jeff Lapiana giving the loss to Oregon.
The Oregon Ducks will have to solve the hitting riddle on the road as they play their next eight games away from PK Park starting with one game against Seattle on Tuesday followed by a trips to Washington, Notre Dame and Michigan State.
