Following a solid performance on Saturday night with a complete game and four strikeouts, Freshman Starter Megan Kleist again entered the circle for the Oregon Ducks on Sunday afternoon for the finale of a three games series with the UCLA Bruins. Oregon used a five hit fifth inning in Game 2 to do just enough to earn the win 6-5 following a disaster on Friday night where nothing appeared to go right for the home team in their new stadium.
Kleist would give up one hit in the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, Oregon would get the Offense going with Nikki Udria and Koral Costa picking up base hits. Geri Ann Glasco would pick up a walk forcing UCLA to pull Starting Pitcher Selina Ta’amilo. The bases were loaded with one out as Paige McDuffy entered the circle for UCLA.
The Bruins would end the Oregon scoring threat with their fifth double play of the series as Hailey Decker hit into an infield out and Glasco was caught off first base.
Gabrielle Maurice would score the first run of the game off a homerun that came off the Pac-12 Networks sign in center field for a 1-0 Bruins lead. Brianna Tautalafua would add to the UCLA total with a solo home run to right field. Kleist would be done for the day as Cheridan Hawkins would enter the game for the Oregon Ducks.
Hawkins would struggle with control and finding the strike zone allowing a walk and a UCLA run to score for a 3-0 lead. She would record her second strikeout to end the top of the 2nd inning.
Oregon would add a run in the third, but UCLA would get it back in the fifth inning as Tautakafua launched her second home run of the game to push the Bruins to a 4-1 lead. Hawkins would hold off the Bruins scoring and have her first 1/2/3 inning in the top of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh the Ducks would again find the bases loaded with Bruins. For the game, Oregon was outhit .357 to .150. Geri Ann Glasco who relieved Cheridan Hawkins would depart and Starter Megan Kleist would return to the mound.
She would get out of the inning with a strikeout and an inning ending double play at third base. Oregon was down to their final three outs and would fall against UCLA. The Oregon Ducks lost their first Pac-12 Series since 2013.
