Over the last month, the Oregon Ducks have struggled on Offense. Entering a big weekend series with a top ten Cal Baseball team saw George Horton and the Ducks knock out Portland on Wednesday night with the Pac-12 again looming on the schedule. A 10-1 win was powered by a Grand Slam by Stephen Packard. Oregon put up 7 hits with 6 walks on the night while walking just one Portland batter.
The Pilots did have 5 hits, but struck out 16 times. Even more impressive, eight Oregon Ducks pitchers combined for the win. Seven of the eight threw shutout baseball, as well as recorded at least one strikeout. The lone run came off the arm of Starter Kyle Robeniol. Of the seven hits for Oregon, the Grand Slam was the most impressive, but Oregon showed something on Offense they have not this season, a sense of sneakyness at the plate.
Kyle Kasser started the first inning with a man on base and hinted at a sacrifice bunt, when the ball came across the plate he hit a single up the middle. Both runners would score in the inning according to GoDucks.com. They are learning to make something out of potentially nothing, but the funny thing is it is something they have known all along. The confidence shined through on Wednesday night at PK Park, they now need to take that momentum into the series with Cal this weekend.
Oregon started the season well, they were a Top 10 team, but lost some momentum. They now need to get it back and what better way then to take out the ninth ranked team in the country in Cal.
