The fourth day of the 2016 Olympic Track and Field Trials was held on the Fourth of July and there were some fireworks when it came to Oregon athletes. Bridget Franek finished first in her heat to make the Final of the 3000 Meter Steeplechase to start the day for the Ducks.
It was a full house at Hayward Field for less than a half day of competition. Following their success in the Men’s 10,000 Galen Rupp and Erik Jenkins looked for similar success in the 5000 Meter opening round. Both made it through, but Bernard Legat won the heat with Rupp. The former Duck finished sixth in the heat and made the final along with Lopez Lamong, Jenkins, and Legat. It will have a very 2012 Olympic Trials feel.
One of the big stories of the Olympic Trials so far is that of Raevyn Rogers who finished the NCAA Track and Field Championships on top of the 800 Meters. She made it through to the final, but finished seventh in a race that saw a former Olympian Alysia Montano fall due to a collision on the Bowerman Curve on the final lap. The crowd fell to a stunned silence. Rogers finished the race in 7th.
In the Men’s Javelin Cyrus Hostetler and Sam Crouser both made the US Olympic Team and will head to Rio. Tuesday is an Off Day. Competition resumes on Wednesday with the Hammer Throw where the Ducks Greg Skipper will be in the competition.
