The season started with the Vert Challenge, the most high profile tournament of the entire 2016 season, outside of the NCAA Tournament. Texas, Florida and Nebraska joined the Ducks to start the season in Eugene. Oregon started 0-2 three weekends ago with losses to Florida and Texas.
I asked Head Coach Jim Moore about what his team learned to move forward and he told me getting off to a good start was part of it. In their last five games the starts have been much better.
"All that hurt us in the first weekend was that we had a bad start in the Texas match, and it carried over to the whole weekend. Seattle had an incredible start on Tuesday, so it forced us to say that we need to be even better.Jim Moore on the importance of a good start(via GoDucks.com)"
Oregon has won fifteen of sixteen sets during the streak and Lindsay Vander Weide appears in mid season form from a stellar Freshman season in 2015. She is joined by some of the best talent in the country. Ronika Stone and Willow Johnson combined for 13 kils, Vander Weide had 11, and Taylor Agost added 10 in a sweep of #21 Illinois at Matthew Knight Arena in the Nike Classic.
The four team tournament includes Illinois, Belmont, and Saint Mary’s. Oregon will look for their sixth straight against Belmont this afternoon at 3pm Pacific Time. The match can be heard in the Eugene/Springfield area on 88.1 KWVA with updated via KPNW Sports on Twitter as we prepare for Oregon Football vs Viriginia.(7:30pm PT, ESPN)
