The firing of California Golden Bears Head Coach Sonny Dykes should raise eyebrows for Pac-12 Football.
Less than a day from the College Football National Championship when things seemed even keel across the country, the California Golden Bears upset the apple cart. Head Coach Sonny Dykes, who finished the year 5-7 and saw his third losing season in a row was fired by the University. The announcement was a surprise to Dykes.

In a statement, Dykes said he was surprised by the announcement, but added that the Cal Football Program was left in a better position from when he started. Dykes was under contract until the 2019 season, but upset the Administration in seeking other jobs. According to Jon Wilner, Dykes was not ‘committed’ to Cal. However, in looking at who the successor may be, it may become more clear.
Last week Chip Kelly said in an interview that he would consider coming back to the College game. This may be setting up the door for him to walk through. It would be an interesting move for Pac-12 Football if this is, in fact, the case. Kelly is the type of coach who would want to set up shop his own way. Being an assistant to Dykes would not be an option. Perhaps Cal is not looking in Kelly’s direction.
Dykes will land on his feet. He was previously and Offensive Coordinator for Mike Stoops in Arizona and also for Mike Leach at Texas Tech.
