Women’s NCAA Tournament: Indiana Upsets Texas Forcing 23 Turnovers

The Texas Longhorns outrebounded Indiana but committed 23 turnovers in an upset loss to open the NCAA Tournament in Eugene on Friday night.

After Indiana took an early lead the Texas Longhorns came back to take the lead before the end of the first half. At the break, Texas was outrebounding Indiana 30-13, but Indiana was down just 8 points, 37-29. Sug Sutton, who has been averaging close to 16 points per game had just 6 in the first half.

Texas shot 43 percent in the first two quarters while Indiana hit 38 percent of their shots inside the arc. Indiana opened the second half with the ball and a three-point shot cutting the Texas lead to 5 points. They would then force a Texas turnover to gain another possession scoring two cutting the Longhorns leads to 3.

It was clear that Indiana came to play from the opening tip. The scored on their opening three possessions of the third quarter. Indiana took the lead with just over 6 minutes left in the third quarter. At the end of the quarter, Texas cut into the Indiana lead, 52-49 as fans started filing in for the second game between Oregon and Portland State it was clear they could be in for quite the finish.

The lead went back and forth to start the fourth quarter with Indiana clinging to a 1 point lead with just over 4 minutes left in the game and a Texas timeout.

Indiana was not going away hitting a big three-pointer with just under 2 minutes left in the game pushing their lead to 67-63. Texas answered cutting the lead to 2.

Indiana finished the game shooting 44 percent, turning 23 Texas turnovers into 24 points to secure the victory. Oregon native Bendu Yeany finished with 17 points. Jaelynn Penn had 24 point shooting 10 for 21 from the floor.

In the end, Indiana had enough to pull off the upset, 69-65 to advance to Sunday.
