The Montreal Alouettes lost on Friday night in the season opener vs the Edmonton Eskimos 35-32 and Vernon Adams Jr. threw for two touchdowns.

Edmonton dominated early with a 17-point lead. Montreal was able to score just 8 points in the first three quarters of the game before Alouettes Starting Quarterback Antonio Pipkin left the game with an ankle injury. Montreal had a touchdown and a missed field goal on the Offensive end before Vernon Adams Jr. came into the game.

The Backup Quarterback engineered two drives, one resulted in a touchdown, the first a pass to B.J. Cunningham for 17 yards with just over 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter to bring them closer at 25-22. The next drive saw Vernon Adams Jr. get the team down the field for a chance at a game-tying field goal that was made by Boris Bede from 52 yards out knotting the game at 25.

While Edmonton brought the firepower on Offense, Adams Jr. showed poise as well as the ability to get the ball to his playmakers when he was on the field. The extent of the injury to Starter Antonio Pipkin is not known, but it appears that once again the former Oregon Duck may have put himself in position for a few starts at Quarterback in the coming weeks.

Two weeks ago in a preseason contest against the Argonauts, it was also a struggle to get the offense moving until Vernon Adams Jr. entered late in the game. He threw an interception on his first pass of the game in a 45-20 loss, but he was the voice of the team in his postgame comments, “We’re going to get on this train (back to Montreal), watch the film and we’re going to be back at practice tomorrow and we’re going to get better. We’re going to learn from it.”

Adams will now likely have an opportunity to lead Montreal on the field this week against Hampton in two weeks on Friday, June 28th.
