Oregon Football welcomes the California Golden Bears on Saturday and it is a big advantage for the Ducks on both sides of the ball according to the College Football Matrix.

Dave Bartoo and I broke down the game and even looking at the recruiting numbers, Oregon is favored. While Justin Wilcox is getting better, the Ducks recruiting numbers are in the top 20 at 17th. Cal is sitting at 43rd in the country, but still has one of the best defenses in the country.

This is a game where the strength with coordinators is on the defensive end, which should be no surprise.

In looking over the first month of the season, the Oregon Football Offense is in good shape overall according to Bartoo, “Oregon’s offense is better than a lot of people thought, in part because they have slowed things down.” On scoring efficiency, Oregon is ranked 17th in the country on the offensive side of the ball. The defense has raised some eyebrows and is ranked the 8th most efficient unit in the country with their strongest quarter being just before halftime.

The Oregon Ducks total scoring efficiency ranks them 10th in the country right behind Clemson meaning if both teams met their offensive output would be similar overall, which is not bad company to be in entering October. The bye week was good for Oregon, “Oregon by not playing moved up on offensive efficiency.”

As far as the game vs California, Oregon is favored to win 21-13. This is before you factor in the home field advantage for Oregon which adds another three points. The Ducks have had a pretty good home record that factors into College Football Matrix numbers.

The loss of Chalmers hurts California. The team comes in ranked 96th in offensive scoring efficiency, but are 24th in defensive scoring efficiency.

Oregon Football hosts California for their Pac-12 home opener at 5 pm Pacific Time on FOX.
