Oregon Women’s Basketball: Ducks Take Round One Of Civil War

The Oregon Women’s Basketball team held a lead and were able to hold off a final charge from Oregon State, 76-64.

It was a top ten matchup at Matthew Knight Arena with Oregon hosting Oregon State on Friday night. Both teams slipped on the last two weeks with Oregon falling at Arizona State and Oregon losing at home last weekend against Stanford. Oregon entered the game ranked 4th. Oregon State came in ranked 7th. In a conference that was very close at the top, both games this weekend between the two teams will be key in March and the Ducks hosted first.

After the Ducks took the opening basket, Oregon State reeled off ten straight points including two three-pointers by Destiny Slocum. Both Sabrina Ionescu and Ruthy Hebard picked up early fouls for Oregon. With just over four minutes left in the first quarter, it was 14-10 Oregon State.

Oregon tied the game a minute later at 14. Sabrina Ionescu pulled up and hit a three-pointer as time expired giving the Ducks a 25-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Oregon Ducks pushed their lead to ten points four and half minutes into the second quarter as Taylor Chavez hit her second three-pointer of the game. Oregon would extend their lead to 45-29 heading into halftime. The Ducks were shooting 55 percent from the floor and 63 percent from three-point range. The Beavers were held to just 18 percent from three-point range in the first half.

The Ducks did not have a turnover in the first 20 minutes while Oregon State turned the ball over five times.

Minyon Moore opened the third quarter with two points and a steal as the Ducks extended their lead to 53-35. Ruthy Hebard also continued to get points in the paint including several opportunities for rebound baskets in the opening minutes of the second half.

Sabrina Ionescu ended the third quarter with a three-pointer again in the final seconds to give Oregon a 62-46 lead. Oregon State has found ways to do enough to stay in the game. Both teams scored 17 points in the third quarter.

Oregon State went on an 11-0 run over a two-minute span to pull within 10 points with just under six minutes left in the game. Oregon saw four turnovers to that point in the second half. Oregon State cut it to 7 points with just over three minutes left in the game. Satou Sabally hit a big three-pointer pushing the lead back to 10 and awakening the sell-out crowd at Matthew Knight Arena.

In the fourth quarter, Destiny Slocum for Oregon State became a one-woman wrecking crew She scored on nearly every possession the ball was in her hands. In the end, Oregon held on for a 76-64 win over the Beavers. Satou Sabally finished with a double-double.

The Civil War Series shifts to Gill Coliseum in Corvallis on Sunday where Oregon State will give the Ducks their best shot to split the series.
