Oregon Football Quarterback Justin Herbert was selected sixth in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft Friday night.

Just like the WNBA Draft last week, there was no podium, no crowds and the pomp and circumstance was from family members as the first round of the NFL Draft took place on Thursday night.  The first part of round one went pretty much as predicted.

Hometown hero Joe Burrow was selected by Cincinnati as the top pick. Quarterbacks were among the top picks. Tua Tagovailoa went to the Miami Dolphins with the fifth overall pick before Justin Herbert was selected sixth by the Los Angeles Chargers. It has been a busy week for Herbert. He also signed several endorsement deals with both Nike and Head and Shoulders.

Herbert is headed to Los Angeles and will join Tyrod Taylor. While he would like to be ‘the guy’ and starter for his new team, he understands he may have to wait. Los Angeles selected Herbert as the replacement for Philip Rivers and the competition for the starting role with the team in camp should be fun to watch.

With the talent that Herbert brings to the table, I expect he will be starting sooner rather than later. He may have a clipboard in his hand to start the upcoming season, but may very well find himself under center before the end of the year if not sooner.

Justin Herbert finished his college career on a high with close to 3500 yards passing, good enough for third in the Pac-12 Conference. He also threw for 32 touchdowns and was named Rose Bowl MVP with their win New Year’s Day over Wisconsin. He now has a new challenge.

San Diego enters the season looking to rebound from a 5-11 season that did not see much success on offense. He comes when the team is completing their relocation to Los Angeles as well as filling holes and helping their Offensive Line. The Chargers Wide Receiver corps is in good shape with Mike Williams and Keenan Allen both having 1000 yard seasons last year.

The Los Angeles Chargers have two more picks this season after taking Kenneth Murray at 23, also on Thursday night. They have one selection in the final four rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.
