Oregon Football opened Fall Camp on Friday and not only were there some new faces, but it looked a little different for the rest of us.

There was no meeting with players and coaches that typically kicks off Fall Camp in Eugene with Oregon Football. No food spread and one on ones with players getting ready for the season. Fall Camp started with just players and coaches in attendance at the Hatfield Dowlin Complex.

Head Coach Mario Cristobal met with the media following practice via Zoom to discuss the first day of Fall Camp, “First day of practice, what you would expect, a lot of juice, a lot of energy. Expectations are very clear.” Cristobal’s biggest job is replacing the Offensive Line for 2020. Penei Sewell has opted out giving some new faces a chance to step into bigger roles.

Cristobal said all five positions are open and as far as how they plan to work things in camp, they are looking at 5 to 6 guys at every position and that can change from drill to drill.

In the new world of the coronavirus pandemic, players are tested regularly. Cristobal said the process on the first day went well, “It takes about 45 mins to get everyone tested. Takes about 50 to get the results. The structure was really good, positive feedback from the players.”

Oregon Football enters healthy with a few players a little banged up, but able to participate. There are also no roster changes to report. Jordan Happle, the Boise State Safety transfer, will arrive in Eugene tomorrow according to the Ducks Head Coach. Happle could be a quick study with Oregon having already worked at Boise State with Defensive Coordinator Andy Avalos. Avalos was at Boise State before coming to Eugene last year.

Cristobal was happy with what he saw from his team on the first day of Fall Camp. There is a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. There are new faces nearly everywhere on offense. With players opting out, there is also work to be done on defense. One area that does not get a lot of early work is Special Teams, who went 3 for 4 on field goals today and may be the most important piece of the 2020 puzzle, “I think you’re going to see a really good team from game 1.”

Fall Camp continues for Oregon Football leading up to the season opener of an abbreviated schedule. The Ducks will host the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, November 7th. Kickoff time is yet to be announced.
