Dan Lanning is already getting to work for Oregon football, landing the Ducks in the top six for one of the 2023 class’ top overall recruits.

It feels like just yesterday Mario Cristobal was announcing his departure from the Oregon football program in order to head back home to Miami to coach the Hurricanes.

About a week later, the Ducks announced the hiring of Dan Lanning as the next head coach and it drew mixed reactions from the fanbase. While he is one of the top coordinators in college football, he’s never been a head coach which makes some wary of his ability to lead an elite Power Five program like Oregon.

Lanning has only been in charge for about two weeks but he’s been making an almost immediate impact in the recruiting landscape.

He’s already persuaded some key players to return to Oregon next season but his recruiting prowess has been taking center stage lately. He’s trending for a top-100 cornerback in the 2023 class who is about to make a commitment announcement and he made the top schools list of a top-50 quarterback as well.

On Sunday, he added another impressive recruiting feat to the growing list, making the top six for five-star 2023 defensive lineman Peter Woods.

Peter Woods would be a huge fish for Oregon football

Along with Oregon, Woods included Florida, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia on his list. The fact that Georgia is there just shows that Lanning was recruiting him in Athens before accepting the Oregon head coaching job. This also means that there’s a relationship already developed between the two. That’s good news for the Ducks.

Oregon making the cut just shows that Lanning is going to recruit at a high level and he’s doing that after just two weeks and while not being on campus full-time yet.

Woods is ranked the No. 23 overall recruit and fourth-best defensive lineman in the class, per the composite. The Alabama-native may be leaning toward the Tide, but he’d be an instant contributor on Lanning’s second-ever team in 2023.

If Lanning wins this recruitment, he’ll have everyone’s attention.
