The Oregon Ducks are new to the Big Ten, but that hasn't stopped ESPN's FPI from giving the Ducks the conference's best shot to win a national title this year.

Heading into the 2024 college football season, nobody in the Big Ten has a better shot at winning a national championship this season than the Oregon Ducks. At least, that’s what ESPN’s preseason FPI projections have to say at the moment.

Ahead of the 2024 Oregon football season, the Ducks, one of the newest programs to make the move to the Big Ten, have emerged as FPI’s favorite in the conference. That includes being the team currently projected above all other Big Ten teams to have a shot to do the following:

And, well, also they've got the best shot amongst the Big Ten teams to win the national title this year. Or so the ESPN computers claim, that is.

ESPN’s FPI gives the Oregon Ducks a 12.8 percent chance to win a national title this year. Again, that’s better than any other team the Big Ten can boast about right now. Dan Lanning and his Oregon football team are entering this season with some high (external) expectations right now.

The Ohio State Buckeyes, a perennial national championship contender and one of the best Big Ten football programs, are going into the year with the second-best chance among Big Ten teams to win a national title, according to FPI. Right now, they’ve got a 10.5 percent chance.

The Penn State Nittany Lions come in at third at 6.6 percent while the Michigan Wolverines (last year’s national title winner) currently have a 1.7 percent chance. After that? Well, there’s not much. USC, another former Pac-12 team, comes into the year with just a 0.3 percent chance of winning a national title.

Here’s what the entire conference looks like right now:

  • Oregon Ducks - 12.8 percent
  • Ohio State Buckeyes - 10.5 percent
  • Penn State Nittany Lions - 6.6 percent
  • Michigan Wolverines - 1.7 percent
  • USC Trojans - 0.3 percent
  • Washington Huskies - 0.1 percent
  • Iowa Hawkeyes - 0.1 percent
  • Wisconsin Badgers - 0.1 percent
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights - 0.1 percent
  • UCLA Bruins - 0.0 percent
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers - 0.0 percent
  • Maryland Terrapins - 0.0 percent
  • Northwestern Wildcats - 0.0 percent
  • Purdue Boilermakers - 0.0 percent
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers - 0.0 percent
  • Illinois Fighting Illini - 0.0 percent
  • Michigan State Spartans - 0.0 percent
  • Indiana Hoosiers - 0.0 percent

The Big Ten is bound to get a lot of attention this season. And if the Oregon football team is truly the best program in the Big Ten, they’re going to steal the spotlight in the Ducks’ first season in the conference. And that’ll be a lot of fun.
