Last year when Oregon Quarterback Marcus Mariota announced he was leaving the Oregon Ducks for the National Football League many in Eugene were happy for the humble young man. He was selected second overall by the Tennessee Titans in the NFL Draft in May. Through Rookie and Fall Camp the former Oregon QB impressed his teammates with his accuracy. He rolled through four preseason games showing off his various abilities to pass and pass on the run. He was able to adapt to becoming an ‘under center’ Quarterback.

After the first week of the NFL Season, the stats were proof that hard work pays off. Mariota threw for two-hundred nine yards and four touchdowns. Marcus Mariota only missed three of his receptions on the day in the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the NFL named him Offensive Player of the Week. He was thirteen for sixteen on the day and finished with a perfect passer rating of 158.3 in a rout of the Bucs 48-14 and top NFL Draft pick and former Florida State Quarterback Jameis Winston.

As a side note, ESPN attempted a tongue in cheek guide in pronouncing Mariota. Sylaballilacally speaking(I just created a new word) It’s Quite Simple:

"“For words and common names, there’s a rule of English spelling that says that when ‘ari’ is followed by a vowel, the ‘ari’ is pronounced as in ‘Mary,'” said Marian Macchi of the web site E-Speech. “Think about the names Marion and Marian, and words like ‘various,’ ‘hilarious,’ ‘gregarious.’ We wouldn’t pronounce ‘various’ as VAHR-i-us, for example.”ESPN Explains The Proper Way To Say The Last Name of the Tennessee Titans Starting Quarterback Marcus Mariota"

The Offensive Player of the Week takes the Tennessee Titans on the road this week to take on Johnny Manziel and the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 10am Pacific Time on CBS.
