The Oregon Ducks welcomed the California Golden Bears to PK Park. Cal went 7-1 on their most recent home stand and came to Eugene with plenty of momentum. George Horton saw his team on the opposite side losing two of three in Washington two weeks ago and last week losing two games at Notre Dame and Michigan State. Oregon would look to get back on track against Cal, but the series would not be easy.
Oregon Starter Cole Irvin gave up five runs in the top of the first inning, but Oregon would fight back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Devin Pearson would add a run in the top of the 4th for the Golden Bears. Irvin would do his best to keep Oregon in the game, but would give up a run in the 4th and a homerun in the 5th to Nick Halamandaris.
The Ducks Offense could not figure out Cal Starter Ryan Mason through the first five innings as Cal put up a 7-2 lead and the Oregon Defense allowed a bunt single to Preston Grand Pre on a ball that hugged the third base line and stayed fair. Oregon found some momentum in the bottom of the 5th, but a double play with Austin Grebeck and Kyle Kasser ended the Ducks threat. A.J. Balta would strike out to end the inning.
Isaiah Carranza would come in to pitch in the top of the sixth, but Cal would tack on another three runs to make it 11-2. Through six innings the Golden Bears muscled out 17 hits. For the game, The Golden Bears hit at a .488 clip. The Oregon Ducks did not eclipse the .300 mark as a team hitting at .240. Oregon first pitch swung in the seventh inning for three straight outs.
The one bright spot for Oregon on Offense was Jake Bennett who had two hits and two RBI’s in the very lopsided loss. Cal set a new record for hits by an opponent at PK Park with 21 hits on the night.
